Health & Safety Policy

1. Introduction and Policy Statement
This policy covers employees, learners, visitors, suppliers/contractors, the community, local authorities, and other users of the premises. It aims to show how the Management discharges their duties under the health, safety and security laws and regulations set by the Dubai Municipality (DM), the Dubai Civil Defense (DCD), the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Dubai Health Authority (DHA)and the Ministry of Health (MOH).
The Management of JAM Training has a moral obligation, as well as a legal duty, to keep our employees working safely and well committed to providing a safe hazard-free environment for employees, learners, visitors and suppliers/contractors.


We aim to:
• Ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to ensure the health, safety and welfare of users of the premises.
• Establish and maintain safe working procedures for employees and learners.
• To provide and maintain safe equipment for use during classes.
• Develop safety awareness, through appropriate training, amongst staff, and learners.
• Formulate and implement effective procedures for use in the event of fire and other emergencies.
• Consult with our employees on affecting their health and safety.
• Investigate accidents and take steps to prevent a re-occurrence.
• Review and revise this policy regularly.
Our current Health and Safety policy is easily accessible to all employees through the shared server and is displayed at the entrance for all visitors.


2. Roles and Responsibilities
A. The Managing Director of JAM Training has ultimate control of the office/classroom.
He will:
● Decide policy and/or advise on policies, procedures and guidance for health and safety.
● Interpret and advise on new legislation impacting the working environment.
● Give strategic guidance.
● Monitor and review health and safety issues.
● Ensure adequate resources for health and safety are available.
● Take steps to ensure the office, classroom, equipment and systems of work are safe.
● Advise and provide adequate training, information, instruction, induction, and supervision to enable everyone in the premises to be safe.
● Maintain the premises in a condition that is safe and without significant risk.
● Provide a working environment that is safe and healthy.
● Provide adequate welfare facilities for staff & learners.
● Review and monitor the effectiveness of this policy.

B. The Training Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school and will support the MD in his role. he will:
● Promote a positive, open, health and safety culture.
● Report to MD on key health and safety issues.
● Seek advice from other organisations or professionals as and when necessary.
● Ensure that all staff cooperate with the policy.
● Devise and implement safety procedures.
● Ensure that risk assessments are reviewed on an annual basis.
● Ensure relevant staff have access to appropriate training.
● Decide policy and/or advise on policies, procedures and guidance for health and
safety.

C. Tutors and Staff will:
• Comply with the JAM Training’s health and safety arrangements.
• All staff should be familiar with the common healthy emergencies in the office/classroom and keep in mind to recognize the priorities and assess the severity of the condition.
• Keep descriptive and detailed records of any serious injury you witness.
• Take reasonable care of their own and other people’s health and safety.
• Leave the classroom/office in a reasonably tidy and safe condition.
• Follow safety instructions when using equipment, computers, and electrical appliances.
• Supervise learners and advise them on:
• How to use equipment safely
• Health and hygiene procedures
• Report practices, equipment or physical conditions that may be hazardous to their line manager and/or the appropriate member of staff.
• Contribute to and highlight any gaps in the risk assessments.


3. Arrangements
3.1. Health & Safety in the Environment:
A. Equipment
Any equipment in the office/classroom should be used safely and for its intended purpose only.
Equipment identified as defective should be taken out of use immediately and labelled accordingly. Maintenance staff should be informed immediately so that arrangements for repairs or replacement can be made swiftly.
B. Electrical Equipment
Electrical equipment will be tested regularly by Maintenance staff. Plugs and leads should be visually checked by all staff using them regularly.
Any electrical equipment used outside must be attached to the electric supply through an RCD, and any lead should be covered by mats to allow safe passage over the wire.
Electrical sockets should be switched off before a plug is removed. Electrical Testing
All items of portable electrical equipment in office/classroom are subject to being tested and inspected by maintenance staff periodically and should be monitored by staff who use them for signs of wear/ malfunction and removed from use if necessary.
C. Display Screen Equipment
For members of staff with ‘desk-based jobs’ the IT Staff can provide appropriate advice about the use and misuse of equipment.


3.2.Employee Health and Wellbeing
Stress at Work
Reactive – individuals who are identified to be suffering from excessive levels of stress (caused by work or personal issues) are supported in accordance with the JAM’s Wellbeing policies.
A. Training
• Health and Safety Training Needs to be included as part of each Employee’s annual review and target-setting process.
• Training needs may also be identified as part of a risk assessment process.

B. Violence and Verbal Abuse
Staff and learners have the right to be and feel safe at JAM’s office/classroom.
Any verbal or physical abuse, bullying or inappropriate language will be dealt with according to JAM’s Behaviour for Learning Policy if it involves a learner’s behaviour, or by calling the Police.
C. ManualHandling:
Manual Handling techniques should be taught to all staff and be included in the Induction
programme for new staff.
Staff carrying / pulling / pushing objects or supporting learners in uneven areas or on stairs should receive appropriate advice and training.
3.3.Emergencies and incidents:
A. Fire Safety & Evacuation of the Building
• Fire exits have appropriate signage.
• Plans showing exit routes are displayed by the door of each classroom.

• A fire drill is practised and documented once a year by the building facility management.
• Evacuation times and any issues which arise are reported to JAM’s

Management Fire extinguishers are checked annually / quarterly by the building’s facility management.
