Overview

This qualification has been developed for anyone involved in the management of fire safety in the workplace. This could include managers, supervisors, team leaders, fire wardens (marshals) and staff working in any area where there is a potential risk of fire. This qualification is aimed at all staff, particularly new starters, in any workplace where a basic understanding of fire safety is required.

Course Content

Topics covered include how fires are caused in the workplace, the fire triangle, hazards during or after a fire, means of escape, fire-fighting equipment and systems, employee and employer duties, fire risk assessments and the role of the fire wardens.

Assessment

This qualification is assessed by an end of course, 30 minutes – multiple-choice examination.

The primary objective of Basic Life Support Course is to ensure that participants gain the confidence and competence to deliver basic life support and AED treatment in emergency situations. This qualification aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to act promptly, safely, and effectively when responding to life-threatening emergencies.

Mode of Study

Face to face – classroom, online – virtual classroom or in company training.

Course Duration

The International General Certificate will involve a minimum of 65 taught hours and approximately 40 hours of private study and background reading. It is possible for fast track learners to complete the qualification in 10 working days.

Assessment

Assessment is a two-step process:

  • IG1 - An open book examination to assess what you know. This is scenario based and will include a closing interview, you will be asked questions about your submission.
  • IG2 - A practical risk assessment to assess what you can do three (3) hours. Learners will complete a risk assessment and develop an action plan for their workplace – this is immediately useful and valuable.

Pass standards

  • IG1: 45 marks
  • IG2: The minimum standard required for a IG2 ‘Pass’
  • A ‘Pass’ must be achieved in both units to achieve the International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

Qualification grades

  • The qualification grade is based on the result from IG1
  • Distinction: 75 marks or higher
  • Credit: 65 – 74 marks
  • Pass: 45 – 64 mark
